My Favourite Songs at the Moment: April 2025

I love music! I wrote a couple of blogs about my favourite tunes to listen to, and I hope you like them!

Drew Sidora: `I Did It To Me` (Full Album)

I love the Real Housewives of Atlanta but I think there are so many people who don`t listen to enough R&B in their life and Drew Sidora is something you should check out. Her entire album is worth mentioning as she blends in all her R&B soul music into her songs, even better if you are in the midst of a breakup and need something to rage on.

The album is from her recent break-up with Ralph. Porsha Williams was frustrated about having her ex-husband Dennis working on the album and featuring him during Drew's creation on the album, but she needs to actually hear her out. It's that good.

It moves you, gets you in your soul and punches you hard to get over humps; like a bad relationship, or the feeling of letting go. My favourite from the album is 'Love 4 a min'. Heartbreaking, piano-ballad with warm vocals and nice undertone.

Here is one of her songs off her album, 'I Did It To Me'.

Djo 'Basic Being Basic'

This song was on my Spotify feed the first time its been released. After his hit song 'End of Beginning' which feels like a sad song about someone dying, this contradicts it.

It has a punchy feel good song and the lyrics are so reprimandable to what is happening in this world right now. People don't feel like themselves, and they want to be someone else, social media still appears a mirror for them.

The Tragically Hip 'My Music At Work'

I'm trying to find more Canadian artists to listen to as the ongoing patriotism towards Canada continues with the ongoing  One of the greatest bands out there that more people need to listen to. I remember they did a SNL skit in the mid-90s and they were stoned during that. Also, they were also attacked in Woodstock in '99 for just being 'boring'.

This song came out in 2000 with an accompany music video and album to follow. I think they cemented themselves as the 'great ones' that came out from Canada and their legacy goes as far as coast to coast. People still love Gord Downie and his bandmates afterwards.

I remember when they did an Amazon Prime documentary about the Tragically Hip, they can sing along to the Hip's songs outside King Street, which was really cool.

This is from their live performance of this song, enjoy!

Sam Fender 'Arms Length'

Sam Fender is probably one of the greatest artists to come out from United Kingdom and his new album stands the test of time of it. Sam has so many great hits like 'Seventeen Going Under' to 'The Borders' and earlier classics 'Leave Fast'.

His music will definitely be one of my most listened to on Spotify and I wouldn't mind seeing him in person when he performs next in Toronto, or somewhere else. I'd love his strong, charismatic and confident vocals and his songs that are powerful, almost like reading a good story with him singing about it.

Arms Length is a song that is [you’re just messing around, and a song literally falls out of the sky.] to [magic moments] with a laid-back guitar riff and the feeling of celebration. Its the feeling of looking at a window in a moving train, and you see the mountains and roads.

Feel free to check it out.

Courteeners 'Modern Love'

British Pop-Rock Band, 'Courteeners' is a multi-instrumentalist band that features Liam Fray, Michael Campbell, Daniel "Conan" Moores, Joseph "Joe" Cross and Elina Lin released 'Mapping The Rendezvous' in 2016.

They are one of the most celebrated British bands from the 2000s, and I listened to one of their songs, 'Cavorting' as part of their album, 'St. Jude' (which went #1 in the UK in 2023) and how its expressed is a very 'Noel Gallagher' sounding vibe, almost as if Oasis came back and did a track. (Oasis is back this year, let's hope they stay together.)

Now, Track #9 on the album, the band Hurts had been helping with this song, producing and writing being [friends for close to ten years]. It was sent to a producer and he did not like it, but Liam wanted to keep it, and it was their sound.

Amy Sky "I Will Take Care Of You"

Another Canadian Artist that I love to share is Amy Sky. Amy is an amazing singer from Toronto. She scored a couple of hits and toured around the world and back here in Canada.

I have a personal story to share. Once, Amy did a book for the Chicken Soup for The Soul and included so many powerful Canadian stories out there.

(sidenote: I read an article about a Canadian in Italy who felt depressed and misses home. Her friend then took her to a place where they found tombstones of Canadian soldiers who died from World War II. It was an powerful story and one that makes you wonder that Canada is everywhere. You need to look for it.)

Anyway, so one of my colleagues unfortunately passed away, and in the book, his name was signed. It was so sentimental to me, that I had to keep it. As it was found lost, I found it first unclaimed, and the place we worked at was about to close.

That book held a sentimental place in my heart, and I knew it was good for me to keep it. So I claimed it. It's still with me today.

This song is an emotional ballad all about life. About being born, getting married, and a new life has born. It's an emotional piano song, similar to another one which I'll share (the next and last one).

Wendy Matthews "The Day You Went Away"

Another emotional ballad, this one comes from Australia.

I remember Wendy Matthews was actually born here in Canada to her parents who were First Nations (Abenaki Tribe), Spanish and Scottish respectively. During the time, she moved to Los Angeles to persue a music career and did backup vocals.

How I remember her is strange. I remember in 2020 (the highlight of the Pandemic) and I was on YouTube listening to Tina Arena. (aka 'Chains' aka 'One of Australia's Treasured Musicians') and seeing her perform and getting awards from ARIA in 1996. (Australian Record Industry Music Awards)

Then the name, 'Wendy Matthews' comes on. I immediately had to check her out, and what a surprise. She became #5 and #34 most played songs in my Spotify Wrapped in 2021. (#5 - 'I Don't Want To Be With Nobody But You' with Absent Friends, and #34 of this song) nad I kept listening to her on YouTube and covered that song mulitple times.

Enough chit-chat! She is an amazing singer, and deserves some recognition! Listen to it below.
