Coordown Campaigns - "No Decision Without Us"
I remember going on Instagram and looking at feeds. In it shows a girl who wears a yellow sweater, singing; 'I want to be where the decisions are made'.
And from then on, I watched the whole thing. It was almost as if Lin Manuel-Miranda wrote and produced this piece of work. But as I kept watching, her parents were deciding what she should wear. Then it pans to other people who need special assistance based on what scenarios represents.
For a quick description,
One cannot use their 'new' touch screens because they are cannot see and require a cane, one cannot hear the fire alarms because they cannot hear anything, one cannot reach the hospital supplies because the shelves are too high because they are short, and during a new presidential term, he is writing new laws, it shows a women who is amputated with her leg, and a person with down syndrome saying 'Give us a seat too!'.
It opened my eyes to see that some could be easy to implement,
its tougher for others, and some people do not take an account to the special needs people require.
As the video goes on, it was an campaign from Coordown; which side note, I thought it was a door company in Italy, depicting doors and the people standing behind it; which is an organization that helps people with special needs.
In particular, this video was for World Down Syndrome Day in 2025.
Whatever they did to get my attention, they did a really good job spreading awareness to the masses, in particular on Social Media.
I did not know they did a campaign about this since 2012, where they were talking about how to actively educate more about down syndrome and talked about the commercials with people with down syndrome. Its amazing how they have a spotlight to be present and there in the media.
In the video below, it also shows that decisions should be inclusionary, and include people with special needs have a right to say. So important to have this discussion, because (as the video says) it'll impact us all.
Unfortunately, they are still under represented in the media here in Canada. There is not much of a presence of people with special needs going about their day, depicted in movies, advertisements and only used for training purposes.
I hope this changes and the video Coordown produced, changes the perspective on including those with special needs depicted on media and living out their everyday lives.
Should also mention, I love the dress she was wearing. She's giving me Avril Lavigne vibes, which is so cool. Love it!
Coordown is an amazing organization that deserves our attention, and rightfully so.
